Violent Forms In Sociopolitical Spheres: Understanding State Mass Killings In Indonesia 1965-66 Violent Forms in Sociopolitical Spheres: Understanding State Mass Killings in Indonesia 1965-66 Amanda Maull 2-04-01 H.Schulte Nordholt Political Violence in Asia In order to develop a general framework with which to understand collective political violence, I examine state mass killings in Indonesia 1965-66. While acknowledging the importance of historical/cultural factors, I identify elements within the sociopolitical sphere that influence actors of collective political violence at national, local, and event- specific levels. Elements discussed are elite interests, justification for violence, formal organizations, and mobilization factors. Finally, I suggest future preventative policy measures. Introduction Violence marks much of human history. Within the sociopolitical sphere, violence has continually served as a tool used by various actors to influence and/or to control territory, people, institutions and other resources of society. The twentieth century witnessed an evolution of political violence in form and in scope. Continuing into the twenty-first, advances in technology and social organization dramatically increase the potential destructiveness of violent tools. Western colonialism left a world filled with many heterogeneous nation-states. In virtually all these countries nationalist ideologies have combined with ethnic, religious, and/or class conflicts resulting in secessionist movements or other kinds of demands. Such conflicts present opportunities for various actors in struggles for wealth, power, and prestige on both national and local levels. This is particularly evident in Indonesia, a region of the world that has experienced many forms of political violence. The state m ass killings of 1965-66 mark the most dramatic of such events within this region. My goal is to understand the killings within a framework of collective political violence. I consider actors and agencies at national, local and event-specific levels in order to understand the mobilization of actors. Within this framework, I determine the relative importance of historical/cultural factors, elite interests, justifications for violence, organization and individual perceptions. Finally, I present questions for future research and preventative policy options. Common explanations of political violence in Indonesia focus on local culture, the legacies of colonialism, and the social conflicts through which violence manifests. Often, observers describe such events as spontaneous and uncontrollable. One obtains the impression that riots are explosions of latent tensions and mass killings, unstoppable runaway trains. However such explanations are at best incomplete and significantly obscure important variables. Mass collective violence is rarely spontaneous. Elite interests, formal organizations and actors at various levels interact to create violent 1 outcomes. I consider such interactions surrounding the state mass killings in Indonesia 1965-66. The Frames of Violent Forms Defined generally as the use of physical force or coercion, used with the intention of bringing harm to others (and their material goods), which is linked to a struggle for power, political violence make take on numerous forms. Such forms are characterized by varying elements of intensity, destructiveness, and duration. It is not my intention to provide a general descriptive theory of political violence. Given the varied nature of political violence and the compounding complexities of unique circumstance, an attempt at such a mega-theory would over-generalize in the search for ideal types and remain inapplicable to real situations. However, some forms of collective political violence possess common elements. This suggests the possibility of a general framework for understanding collective political violence. Understanding the similarities and differences between forms of collective violence would aid efforts at preventive policies. To begin creating a general frame, I analyze state m ass killings in Indonesia 1965-66. Specific forms of collective political violence present many superficial differences and few similarities. State mass killings are methodical, wider in scope and more violent. Contained to specific regions, endemic communal violence, in the form of riots, pogroms, and massacres seem sporadic and spontaneous. However, both types of collective violence require some level of organization. Though not perfectly continuous, both are maintained over periods of time. Similarly, they must be analyzed combining different interactive levels: national, local, and event-specific. I begin with one form and consider the interaction of the following elements across levels: elite interests, justifications for violence, organization, and mobilization of individual actors. A Dark Romantic was known for valuing intuition over logic and reason and thought that human events had certain signs and symbols behind them. Poe used the literary technique of symbolism very well, which Dark Romantics were known to use quite often. Dark Romantics were known to explore the dark side of a subject, but Poe was especially known for this because he had a very mad and deranged psyche. Poe used conflicts and bad experiences from his own life to help add him in his dark and creepy writings. Poes, The Fall of the House of Usher examines the dark side of human life through the life of Roderick Usher and his decaying house. Right away Poe begins to describe the atmosphere around the Usher home, which is eerie and raises the readers attentiveness. Before getting inside the house the narrator is already frightened by the appearance of the house, which looks like a face and has a c rack running down the center of the structure. The house now seemed unstable to the narrator and was afraid to enter it because he was afraid it might collapse on him ... made its way down the wall in a zigzag direction... (Pg 266), which foreshadowed the ending of the story. After entering the house the narrator was lead to the room that contained his dear old friend Roderick. Roderick was described to the reader as a cadaverousness of complexion; an eye large, liquid... (Pg 267) that gives the reader the idea that Roderick is not in good health. The description that Poe used for both the house and Roderick gives the reader solid proof that his is writing in a dark romantic style. His view of the house came from the perspective of man who was deranged and offered the reader only the sense of fear. The History of Lighting and Lamps The first lamp was invented around 70,000 BC. A hollow rock, shell or other natural found object was filled with moss or similar material that was soaked with animal fat and ignited. Humans began imitating the natural shapes with manmade pottery, alabaster, and metal lamps. Wicks were later added to control the rate of burning. Around the 7th century BC, the Greeks began making terracotta lamps to replace handheld torches. The word lamp is derived from the Greek word lampas, meaning torch. Oil Lamps In the 18th century, the central burner was invented, a major improvement in lamp design. The fuel source was now tightly enclosed in metal, and an adjustable metal tube was used to control the intensity of the fuel burning and intensity of the light. Around the same time, small glass chimneys were added to lamps to both protect the flame and control the flow of air to the flame. Ami Argand, a Swiss chemist is credited with first developing the principle of using an oil lamp with a hollow circular wick surrounded by a glass chimney in 1783. Lighting Fuels Early lighting fuels consisted of olive oil, beeswax, fish oil, whale oil, sesame oil, nut oil, and similar substances. John plays a big part in the story because everything in the book evolves around him. In the book he goes to a lawyer in Washington DC because he is told that he has received something from his father that has been passed down to him in his will. John gets to DC and receives a letter from his father to him. The letters tell him that when he was in Jerusalem for the archeological dig that he found three stones and 1 round stone globe. Each stone glowed and at the bottom of each stone was the word "McGowan" carved. The globe had the name "Sarah" carved on it. Later on in the letter it say that his correspondent Ari told him that the he knows of the stones and said that they have a great deal to do with god. He says that when the Messiah Stones are found that God will judge who is worthy. When John goes home he tells his wife and he decides that his destiny is to go to Jerusalem and find the stones. When they get there they go to a temple where people pray one to two times daily. When they get there a woman that is praying approaches them and says that she has been expecting them. She says that she has had dreams of them coming and she has also come to Jerusalem to find the stones. They go to a coffee house and compare dreams. Later on John finds Ari’s address and goes there. He finds him and Ari tells him a the story of how his father died. He says that when him and his father were in a war in Jerusalem.

Ultimately, it resulted in Olds being reassigned to work on the Springfield project full time instead of be shared between the two teams. This paper will examine what response a project manager should provide if faced with the same issues Palmer faced within the case. Secondly, this paper will examine what Palmer could have done to avoid losing Olds. In addition, this paper will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of operating under a matrix organizational structure. Finally, this paper will examine what the management of Moss and McAdams can do to more effectively manage situations like what occurred in case. Doing Things Differently Over the course of six weeks of having to share Olds between the Jacksonville Audit and the Springfield project, Palmer experienced several issues with Crosby. At the initial phase of the project, both Crosby and Palmer agreed that Olds would dedicate his mornings working on the Springfield project and his afternoons would be dedicated to working on the Jacksonville project. From the onset, Crosby continually continue to disregard the agreed upon terms of the work schedule. If I were Palmer there are several things I would have done differently in an effort to not lose Olds, but more importantly, decreasing the impact upon my projects schedule. I would have definitely added having to share Olds as a risk factor in regards to meeting my projects baseline deadline and cost. In addition, additional time would have been added into my baseline schedule to reflect having to share Olds. All of these risks would have been communicated to upper management and to Sands to ensure that they were aware of the cost and time impact with having to share Olds. If management insisted on moving forward, I would have negotiated with Sands and Crosby that Olds be assigned to the Springfield project in exchange for adding two accountants onto the Jacksonville Audit. Basically, the Jacksonville audit appears to require accountant auditing skills. Olds has a reputation for being an innovative problem solver and his skill set seemed to be better suited for the Springfield project. The requirement for my project is to conduct and audit which accounting skills is key and should be able to be performed by other accountants at the firm. By adding 2 additional resources to my team to replace the one resource, I may be able to complete the project in less time and save money. Escape the Inevitable Palmer possibly could have possibly done several things to avoid losing Olds. However, given Olds skill set and his apparent ability to come up with innovative solutions, it is possible that the Olds would still have lost interest in conducting an audit as opposed to working on the special consulting project team. According to Gray and Larson (2008), there are several advantages and disadvantages to this type of organizational structure. The advantages of this type of structure are that it allows multiple projects to go on at the same time by sharing resources. It also allows the project managers to focus on coordinating and integrating different units or resources that can be integrated into several functions within the organization. Also, at the completion of a project, it is easier for project participants to transition from one team to another. Lastly, it allows greater flexibility by allowing the sharing of resources. According to Gray and Larson (2008), there are several disadvantages to operating under a matrix organization. One of the disadvantages of a matrix organization are infighting between project teams because of having to share resources. Another disadvantage is that is it can be stressful for team members with having to report to more than one chain of command. In addition, it can slow projects down as a result of having the teams to agree on items that impact multiple functional areas. Effective Management The management at M&M definitely has their hands full with operating under a matrix umbrella. Palmer experienced several issues with attempting to manage his project. The Moss and McAdams firm could have done a few things to help out in his situation. My first recommendation is that they implement a project management office instead of having Sands to operate within this capacity. Her role is that of office manager and I don’t believe with her other duties that she can effectively manage assigning personnel to different teams. But what makes English 103 unique I believe, is the intensity and the depth of reading materials required. I needed this class because it is a prerequisite for me to enroll in the University level English course. I finished English 28 and English 101 last year and as I reflect, both English subjects were both hard as they demanded time and discipline. According to the syllabus and course description, English 103 also squires extensive reading and writing using argumentative essays and the final paper submission must be at least 95 percent free of any grammatical errors. In this course I expect that there will be a lot of work because of the reading, analysis, and writing requirements. When I previewed the modules in the Études website, it is obvious that reading is the first main activity in this English course. The materials are varied and nothing I have encountered before. I presume they are modern and intense. Students are expected to apply critical thinking to analyze the material promptly. I have a part- time Job as a caregiver for a stroke patient earning minimum wage. In this Job, a college degree is not required and I do not need to be a trained reader because the nurses take care of the medications and medical reports. It dawned on me, that to achieve a step higher from where I am, I have to finish a college degree and that meaner I have to acquire the skills to be an efficient reader. This course will prepare e for complex reading materials I may encounter in the professional world such as medical or business reports. The story of a man named Anthony Robbins inspired me in the passion for reading. He loved to read so much that he finished and absorbed a book in one day. He did it for seven years and end up starting his million dollar company at the age of 24. In his speeches, he shared that when he read its like absorbing the experience of the author. I heard my boss saying at one point, Its either we spend many years of committing the mistakes and discover what works or e read others experience and learn from them. Life is and will be full of challenges; because of that, we get the benefit of acquiring wisdom by reading. Anthony Robbins never finished college. But in spite of that, he is now one of the most sought after motivation speaker to some of the top 500 Forbes companies. English 103 is a course that would sharpen and give me the exposure I need to broader and deeper materials. The next skill I expect to be sharpened in this class is the ability to organize thoughts and ideas in preparatio n to writing. Based on experience, when my mind is cluttered it is very difficult to write. In fact creating a draft is what best works for me because it focuses my mind to think in a specific direction. I expect that there will be a lot of brainstorming and drafting wherein an outline will be required. Those thoughts organized and written will serve as the introduction, body and conclusion of the essay that I need to write at least every two weeks. I expect that there will be many corrections in my grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and sentence structure. I know that writing is a tool to communicate and Moreover, in this course, I will be trained to create interest for my target audience. And in order to do that I need to: convince, sympathize, inform, and argue. The writing skills I will learn from this course will help me in the future to write effective emails, post comments, write proposals, and so much more. It is crucial that I learn this communication skill because it will either make or break my career in the future. Skilled writing can save time when written clearly to give instructions. The use of transitional words is also important to provide smooth flow from one idea to another. It is important to connect the ideas we have instead of the isolated thoughts here and there. In addition, I expect to comply by using correct margins and indentations in my papers. While all ideas borrowed in the text must be cited. I expect that there will be lots of revisions until the tutor advise me that my essay is at least 95% free from grammatical and structural error. To pass this course, I must be disciplined and be able to manage my time wisely.
